June 19th marks this year’s Father’s Day! Did you know that the first observance of Father’s Day took place over a century ago in Fairmont, Virginia, USA on July 5, 1908? It was organised by a Grace Golden Clayton who wanted to celebrate the lives of the 210 fathers who had been lost in the Momongah mining disaster several months earlier in Monongah, West Virgina. Clayton chose the Sunday nearest to the birthday of her recently deceased father. And the rest … as the cliche says … is history.
The officially recognized date of Father’s Day varies from country to country. But while most European, African and Caribbean countries as well as the US and Canada always plump for the third Sunday in June, some countries differ. In Germany for example it’s celebrated on the same day as Ascension Day (the Thursday forty days after Easter), while in Thailand, it is set as the same day as the birthday of the king. Most interesting of all is Brazil, where Father’s Day is celebrated nine months before Mother’s Day! What’s that about?
